Types of birth control

Here are several common forms of birth control you can choose from:

Natural family planning

Natural family planning is one of the least effective birth control methods, but it can work well with strategic planning. You’ll learn to recognize when you’re most fertile, so you can avoid having sex on these days.

Barrier methods

Condoms (male and female), diaphragms, and cervical caps are examples of barrier birth control methods. They’re simple to access but must be used each time you have sex to reduce the risk of becoming pregnant. Condoms also help protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, they may not be as effective as other forms of birth control.

Hormonal birth control

Hormonal birth control methods use hormones to help prevent pregnancy. Examples include birth control pills, implants, shots, patches, vaginal rings, and intrauterine devices (IUDs). The best form for you depends on your preferences and if you’re willing and able to take a pill regularly.

Nonhormonal IUDs

Copper IUDs can be inserted into your uterus through your vagina to help prevent pregnancy without hormones. Your provider can remove it if and when you decide to become pregnant.

Emergency contraception

If you have a sexual experience that wasn’t planned or a barrier method broke, and you need extra protection against becoming pregnant, Primary Care Doctors of Grand Prairie offers prescription emergency contraception. It’s most effective when taken soon after intercourse.

IUDs can also be used as emergency contraception when inserted within five days of having unprotected sex.

Sterilization

Sterilization methods, such as a vasectomy and tubal ligation, are more permanent forms of birth control available to couples who do not want to become pregnant anytime in the future. Our Primary Care Doctors of Grand Prairie experts offer referrals to specialists who can complete these medical procedures.
